Meet our trainees

Let us introduce you to two of our management trainees, Carla Bolou and Ben Wilson.

Since joining the GEN family they have been closely supported by our expert teams to gain the essential skills, tools and experience that will drive their ongoing career development and contribute to our continued success.

All done the GEN way.

Carla Bolou: Trainee Site Manager

“GEN’s on-the-ground training, mentorship and support has been brilliant. It’s made me want to be the best site manager I can be”

Two years ago, armed with a year of construction industry experience, Carla was seeking a new hands-on, site-based role.  When she heard GEN was recruiting for a trainee site manager, she jumped at the opportunity.

Partnered through the trainee induction process with experienced contract and project managers like Joe Ballard, Rob Doyle, Eugene Cadden and Regi Kausinis, Carla swiftly grasped the complexities of site management.

She’s had the opportunity to learn differing aspects of the role by working on diverse projects including Laing O’Rourke’s Baker Street office redevelopment and Lewisham Gateway for Balfour Beatty.

Six months ago, GEN felt she was ready to take on the responsibility of supervising our Lewisham site. Carla was up for the challenge yet has never felt left on her own, with management support constantly accessible. Carla is very appreciative of the responsibility entrusted to her and now aspires towards a project or contract manager role.

She greatly values her continuing training in project management that offers ready contact to mentors like Eugene and Joe. Along the way, Carla has learnt excellent time management, organisation and communication skills, and critically, when to pick your battles with main contractors!

What Carla likes most about working at GEN is that feeling of family and knowing from the top down, support and advice is always available. Carla relates to the company’s beliefs of remaining authentic, accountable, open and honest, and sees this lived out at GEN every day.

Carla started with myself on our Lewisham Gateway Phase 2 project. Her keenness to learn and willingness to place herself outside her comfort zone has really pushed her learning and ability to the next level. Carla’s potential is clear to see and we are all genuinely excited to aid and watch her grow into an exceptional manager/ leader at GEN.
Joe Ballard, Contract Manager.

Ben Wilson: Trainee Quantity Surveyor

“As a trainee, being able to make a real difference has been the biggest win for me so far. GEN offers loads of opportunities for progression and the chance to continue your education at the same time.”

Ben Wilson applied for a trainee quantity surveyor opening at GEN after dipping his toe in construction with general labouring, traffic marshalling and groundworks experiences.

Six months in, Ben has found his calling. In fact, it’s already energised him to target promotion to QS next year, and map out further career plans towards Senior QS, Commercial Manager and eventually Commercial Director.

Ben began his traineeship managing wages, before moving on to pricing up variations. He’s found that having a proactive attitude and being willing to grasp independent responsibility has enabled him to quickly thrive.

By assisting GEN’s expert QS team including Harry Barber, Matt Baker and Alun Salt, Ben has gained hands-on experience at McLaren’s Thames Road project in Barking and Berkeley Homes’ Hildenborough development. He’s also had the chance to work on central London sites like Baker Street (Laing O’Rourke), and George Street. Next up is partnering QS Matt Baker on a new Trafalgar Square-based office development, for Multiplex.

Ben’s proud of an initiative he masterminded a few weeks in, when based at Hildenborough. He created a project tracker for Project Manager Zlatomir (Zlat) Dimitrov which helped boost site workload efficiency. Zlat intends to redeploy this tracker onto other sites.

One of GEN’s core values is ‘Making It Happen’:  Ben was recognised for this by taking on the successful procurement of a new payment system which brought the payroll function in-house. It has generated thousands of pounds in monthly cost savings.

Ben praises GEN’s camaraderie environment and its genuine, open people, where you can engage and consult with colleagues on any level. He also gives a thumbs up to flexible working, a good starting salary and company car!
